Prof. Alexander Ikechukwu Ajai

Chemistry Department
Federal University of Technology, Minna.

Alexander Ikechukwu Ajai is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Federal University of Technology Minna, Nigeria. He has his PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Federal University of Technology Minna, Nigeria.  He has been teaching analytical and, food processing related courses in the Department for the past twenty years. He was the departmental postgraduate programme coordinator (2015- 2017). He has worked as departmental sub-committee head and member of various university sub-committee. He is a member of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN) and Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON). He is a member of the Federal University of Technology Minna, Directorate of Research Innovation and Development (DRID) Research Proposal evaluation committee. He is a member of African Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxins and Food Safety and the Research theme leader of the Heavy Metals and Pesticide Residues Unit of the Centre. He is a member of editorial board of International Journal of Food Nutrition and Safety and a reviewer for different International Journals. His research focus is on environmental toxicants, food and water/wastewater analysis. He has supervised, co-supervised and graduated over twenty five (25) postgraduate students and several undergraduate students. He has over fifty (50) publications in various International peer reviewed Journals. His researches focus is on food and water/wastewater analysis with special attention on identification, quantification and remediation of toxic heavy metals and other carcinogenic toxicants in raw and processed foods and water using different analytical techniques with a view to improving on the food safety for the consumer and the country in general. He is currently researching on some carcinogenic parameters (PAHs, pesticides and toxic heavy metals) in raw and processed foods with a view to coming up with some baseline data on these contaminants in foods. Carcinogenic toxicants and toxic heavy metals in foods have been a global issue, and in Nigeria, there is paucity of data.

His Research Agenda: For research findings from the Universities to be relevant, there is need for the manufacturing and processing industries to collaborate with the Academia in order to ensure that the findings from institutional researches are brought to bear in their industry for the overall economic development of the nation.

Research Area

My research is in the areas of heavy metals and carcinogenic toxicants in water/wastewater, raw, processed and stored foods with a view to coming up with the baseline data for these chemical toxicants in the region.
