      Prof. Jimoh Oladejo TIJANI was born in Kisi, Oyo State, Nigeria on 21st December, 1981 to the family of Late Baba Tijani Bamidele Akande Afejigba Asagunna and Late Alhaja Amomot Adeboyin Asabi Agba Olowo of Ikukoyi Compound, Oke Omode, Kisi Oyo State. He had his primary and secondary school education at Kanjuko Baptist Primary School and Lagbulu Memorial High School in Kisi, Oyo state, South West, Nigeria between 1986 to 1991 and 1991 to 1997 respectively. While at the Primary School, he was chosen as the Sport Prefect.He became Time Keeper at SS2 in 1995-1996 and later Assistant Senior Prefect between 1996-1997 He was the overall best student in Science in 1997 at Lagbulu Memorial High SchooL, Kisi He proceeded to Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State in year 2000 and bagged B.Tech degree (Chemistry with Polymer Science, First Class Honor) in the Department of Chemistry in 2006. (2006), first of its kind in history of the university and won the Vice-Chancellor and Dr. Aminu Dorayi award’s as the best graduating student in the School of Science and Science Education during 2004/2005 academic session. In year 2001-2003, he won Federal Government of Nigeria undergraduate scholarship. After the one year mandatory NYSC in 2007 (Plateau State), his academic excellence earned him an academic appointment (Assistant-Lecturer) as a full-time staff in his Alma mater (Department of Chemistry, FUT, Minna) in 2007. In his quest for knowledge, he immediately enrolled for Postgraduate programme on assumption of duties and in 2011 completed M.Tech (Analytical Chemistry) (2011) at Federal University of Technology, Minna with distinctions. With the support and sponsorship of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund) in 2013, he obtained his PhD in Chemistry in 2016 at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. He rose through the ranks and was promoted as a full Professor on 1st October 2023.

Academic and professional achievements

As a keen dynamic fellow who has flair for research and a penchant for hard work, he competed and won a keenly contested Doctoral Research Fellowship Award instituted by National Research Fund (NRF) South Africa for a period of two years in the field of Emerging Chemicals of Concern in Our Water System from April 2014 to April 2016 tenable at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. He won this prestigious PhD candidate award attracting a sum of  300,000.00 Rands to support his project titled “Detection, Quantification and Removal of Chemicals of Emerging Concerns in South African Water System ”. Prof. Tijani is a strong member of Nanotechnology Research group of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, Nigeria. He is a Principal Investigator of many completed and ongoing industrial and agency research projects. He is a well-established expert in chemistry, with a focus on material science including nanotechnology, catalysis, beneficiation of industrial wastes, and a further focus on environmental remediation and water treatment. He has been involved in teaching, research and supervision of masters and doctoral candidates.

 

In December 2020, he emerged Winner of the 2020 edition of Prof. Kayode Adebowale Young Scientist Prize in Chemical Sciences Organized by Nigerian Young Academy in Lagos.

 

In 2021, he won the FUT Minna Vice Chancellor’s Commendation award for Outstanding Scholarly Publications as Top 10 Ranked Staff in Publications in Scopus Indexed Journals Based on Number of Citations; Vice Chancellor’s Commendation for Outstanding Scholarly Publications as Researcher with more than 1000 Google Citations; Vice Chancellor’s Commendation for Outstanding Scholarly Publications for Attracting National Grants. 

In 2023, FUT Minna Vice Chancellor awarded him Certificate of Excellence and Recognition for Publication in Q1 Journal; Certificate of Excellence and Exceptional Achievement for Winning TETFund National Research Grant Twice (2020, 2021). He has also attracted different academic grants as Principal Investigator including TETFund Institutional Based research grant 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023, Raw Materials Research and Development Council, Abuja, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) Research Grant. He has also attracted different academic grants as Principal Investigator including TETFUND National Research Grant 2020 (N 27,089,890.00) and 2022 (N17,000,000), TETFund Institutional Based research grant 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 (N2,000,000.00 Each), Raw Materials Research and Development Council, Abuja (N5,000,000.00), National Agency For Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI)  Research Grant (N3,000,000.00).

 In 16th September 2024, A document recently released by Elsevier B. V (Netherlands) and a team of researchers led by Prof. John P.A. loannidis from Stanford University, USA displayed comprehensive list of top 2% scientists across all fields world-wide based on metrics obtained from Scopus, the world acclaimed largest database of peer-reviewed scholarly documents, identified Prof.J.O. Tijani of FUT Minna ranked as number 64th among Two Hundred and Thirty Three Nigerian scholars

 According to ADScientist index, Prof. J.O. Tijani is ranked 23rd among the top 100 scientists in Nigeria and 114th out of 164, 482 in Natural and Chemical Sciences respectively topmost scholars in Nigeria and the World at large. Prof Tijani is also ranked 3rd and remain the most cited researcher in Federal University of Technology Minna. He is a reviewer to several Journals published by Elsevier, Taylor and Francis, Springer, Wiley and several others. He has served as external examiners to University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria, South Africa. He has over one hundred and twenty (120) articles published in both national and international journals of high repute, 5 book chapters, 15 conference Proceedings, and 1 granted patent.  Eighty Four (84) out of these published articles are indexed in Scopus with citations of 6,155, h-index of 31. He has attended several local and international conferences within and outside Nigeria. Prof Tijani has supervised to completion and graduated 7 PhD and 24 MSc students. Prof. Tijani is presently double as the Deputy Director (Innovation and Development) in the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Development, and also the Coordinator, Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, Nigeria. He has also served as member of different committees in the University. He is a member of Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN) and happily married with children.
